New York, skiing, snow tubing and shopping :)
One more update form overseas:) I'm sitting in the living room with Nicole who has another snow day. When I look outside I see a clear blue sky, the sun and about 10cm of snow. Beautiful! Yesterday it was a real snow day, with lots of snow coming down. Tired from a full day of shopping in a huge shopping mall on Monday (400 stores) we had a relax-day; we stayed on the couch with brownies, pizza and salad and napped. Later in the afternoon Susan took us to Roundtop to go skiing. It was great with all the fresh snow and we had a lot of fun!
This was the second time skiing for us this week, as Nicole and I already went on Sunday afternoon as well. Sunday was a sunny day and therefore the slopes were more icy, challenging us on the skis and board. Both nights after skiing we warmed up in the hottub :):)
Last week on Thursday Susan and I drove up to New York. It's only a three hour drive to NY and we both love the city, so I was happy we could go! We left early in the morning, just after Bryce left for school and we arrived in the city just before noon. We started with One Ground Zero, the place with the monuments for 9/11. An impressive place, that not yet has been finished. The names of all people who died are engraved in marble that surrounds two waterfalls built on the old fundamental of the twin towers. On a persons birthday a rose is placed in the name; there were many roses that day......the freedom tower rices above many buildings and is a clear mark in the skyline.
After walking around for about an hour we drove up to 125street and Susan showed me Columbia university and the places she studied and lived. Then we drove back to 45th street and parked just off Times Square. We were standing in line for TKTS (half price tickets for Broadway shows) for a little while when we learned that it would be about the same price to go to the Lion King, for which you can only buy regular tickets. That musical had been on my wish list for a long time and as TKTS didn't have something that really appealed we decided to buy tickets for the lion king. With the tickets in our pockets we started to walk down 5th street, watched the ice skaters at Rockefeller centre, had a slice of pizza and walked around in Central Park. I love this place and it is beautiful during wintertime as well!
We took the subway back to Herald Square for some shopping (great sales!) and were just in time back at the theatre. The show was as great as promised!! Impressive singing, music, costumes, set/stage and special effects. Glad we could go!
After the show we spent a little bit more time on Times Square, but as we still had a 3 hour drive back we left soon after. And it was good we did. Traffic was jammed in the Lincoln tunnel so it took us longer to get out of the city. By the time we got to New Jersey we were almost out of fuel and I learned that night that in New Jersey fuel stations are not open 24 hours... Pretty adventurous to drive in the middle of nowhere ( we got of an exit where it said there would be fuel, but no) with the low fuel light on and multiple closed gas stations. Just when we were about to decide to take a motel for the night, we passed a divey bar. Susan was brave enough to go in and ask for directions. Luckily the bartender was sober and pointed us in the direction of a gas station 5 miles away that would be open. With only about 6 miles worth of gas left at that point, we were happy when we reached the station by car! At 3.30 am we event to bed, happy and tired.
Friday was a quiet day, in the afternoon I worked on some palm tree table pieces that the kids from scouting would be working on that evening. Susan had been planning to prepare for it but she was taking Nicole and some friends to a Christian band concert that night and therefore I helped preparing and joined Erik and Bryce to the scouting in the evening. If I had been thinking that afternoon that I could always moonlight as a primary school teacher, I knew by sure in the evening that that wasn't an option. 20 boys+a craft project = chaos. However, we got some palm trees out of it and Susan will fix the rest later.
Saturday me and Nicole joined another scout activity together with Bryce and Erik and the rest of the den we went snow tubing. All morning we went down a snow covered hill in tubes, either alone or with multiple tubes, either on our hineys or tummies. We had a blast!
As I hope you can read, I'm having a great time here. It's relaxed, gezellig and I'm feeling good. Nicole and I do a lot of things together and we have a lot of fun. Skiing, movies, shopping and just hanging out, we are having a really good time together and are laughing a lot!
Two more days before I leave, I just don't wanna think about it yet. So I won't. I'm off to eat some more brownies!
Big hug, M
